The Zen Stone is the new entry level of Creative MP3 players, and will replace the aging Zen Nano. This is a very simple 1 Go player, as its main competitor, the Apple Shuffle. The Shuffle benefits from its design and its clip to be classier, smaller and maybe more practical, but the design of the Creative is cute, and I like the colours. Its main argument is its price : it will cost at least half the price the Apple player.

It will be MP3, WMA and Audible compatible, with a 10 hours runtine (Shuffle : 12 hours, Zen Nano : 18 hours on an alkaline AAA battery).
One thing that I like, it’s you can drag-and-drop files through USB connexion, so you don’t have to use proprietary formats or software to listen to your music.

Two things that I don’t like :
- the switch from AAA batts to integrated lithium battery : that means that if you travel, and not just commute, you must bring with you cables for charging and depend on anomad energy sources, rather than just bring one or two extra little batteries.
- the lack of an SD-card port, another cool MP3 player lacking of evolution capacities. 1 Go isn’t always enough.

Beside the Apple Shuffle, you may be interested in looking at the old Nano Zen, since you can find now 1 Go version for about $ 50 (and will probably keep lowering with destocking). You won’t have the cute pebble design and it’s almost twice heavier, but this challenger is available with some nice colours, and you got a recording function (micro and in-line), FM radio, a (tiny) screen (and it uses an AAA battery with good runtime).

54 x 35 x 13 mm for 18.5 grams. Retails about $ 35.

I think that since it works only with Windows, a less-iPodish finition would have been even better, something like a light pink or fun colours.

Encombrement is minimal, with 118 x 65x 38 mm dimensions. This pigglet is also a lightweight, with only 45 grams and it costs only $ 10.

An incredible story for an US soldier based in Iraq, saved by his iPod weared on the left side of his jacket:

Kevin Garrad (3rd Infantry Division) was on a street patrol in Iraq and as he rounded the corner of a building an armed (AK-47) insurgent came from the other side.

The two of them were within just a few feet of each other when they opened fire. The insurgent was killed and Kevin was hit in the left chest where his IPod was in his jacket pocket. It slowed the bullet down enough that it did not completely penetrate his body armor. Fortunately, Kevin suffered no wound.

The french internet provider Cegetel is trying to take the succession of the first french telematic revolution (the Minitel) with the offer of a simple computer, running a proprietary-linux, and apparently very easy to use :

“We wanted to create something as simple and cheap as the Minitel to reach technophobes and people without much money,” said Frédéric Charrier, manager of the Easy Neuf project, which started its first national advertising campaign last week. “For a slightly higher subscription, customers get a simplified computer with all services they might need.”

For €39.90, or $53.30 - a €10 premium over the price of most broadband subscriptions in France - customers get a white computer roughly the size and shape of a toaster. A one-time payment of €29 buys a keyboard, mouse and camera; for €99 more, the customer can get a 14-inch color monitor.

The minimum subscription is twelve months long, with a 150 euros deposit as guarantee. For this price, you get a simple computer with only 512 Kb of flash-memory (but you can use an external hard-drive) and an open-source software suite (Firefox, Abiword, Gnumeric, The Gimp, a multimedia player, etc.), an integrated modem, an ADSL (up to 8 Mb/s) connection, and a free phone line.

The Box is build aroung an Intel i852GM chipset with Intel M600 processor (and a Broadcom BCN6348 modem), 512 Mo of RAM, an ADSL port, two ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 ports, audio and VGA connection.

The operating system displays icons along the bottom of the screen, and offers several versions, depending on the needs of the user. At the simplest level, the computer offers menus based on a theme. The screen button “search,” for example, has a submenu offering a telephone (which links to a yellow pages Web site), an encyclopedia (which links to Wikipedia) and another option that links to search engines.

(clic to enlarge)

If the quality of the offer is good enough (reliability of the Box and of the internet-connection), they may enjoy the very important success of the first state-Minitel.
