Features

• Uses a Nichia white GS LED with a life of 100,000 hours

• Constant brightness: 10 Lumens

• Uses one 1.5V AAA ( Alkaline, Ni-MH, Lithium ) battery, inexpensive and widely available

• 7.1cm (Length) x 1.4cm (Diameter)

• 21-hour working time ( 11-hour sun mode plus 10-hour moon mode)

• Made of aircraft-grade aluminum

• Durable Type III hard anodized finish

• 14-gram weight (excluding batteries)

• Waterproof to IPX-8 Standard

• Reliable twist switch

• Capable of standing up securely on a flat surface to serve as a candle

With its extreme light weight, high brightness, long runtime and floody beam pattern, the H50-Q5 headlamp is the perfect choice for camping, hiking, task lighting as well as indoor use.

It’s one of the most ingenious and polyvalent headlight of today, and probably one of the most practical. I love the idea of changing the direction of headlight, like a Pentagon Molle light but with much less bulk.

Coming with glowing in the dark accessories, it’s really cool and seems to be the perfect complement of a good throwing Cree light like the Fenix ones.

It runs on a single AA battery of any kind for a maximum runtime of 80 hours at less than three lumens (two hours on maximum setting, which provide about 70 lumens of flooding light).

It weights 58 grams (2 oz.) loaded and dimensions are 18.3 mm (diameter) and 66.5 mm (lenght). It’s of course waterproof.

Only two years ago, the idea of tiny flashlight running on standard batteries for hours and able to put shame on best “tactical” flashlights there was was truely audacious.

The chinese brand do it, and go on with innovation. This time, a batch of very last generation Cree leds is embeded in classical models, like the L2 or the P3.

The Fenix L2D CE is a digitally controlled constant current multilevel flashlight Fenix has to offer. It has six levels of output, which not only allows the user to select the best compromise between brightness and runtime for any given task but also has ability to aid in an emergency. The L2D CE does all this and still retains a compact size. If you’re looking for solid reliability, digitally regulated brightness, and compact size, this Fenix is for you.

The Black Diamond Cosmo is a first rate headlamp for kicking around camp, or walking on the trail.

The different power settings help you dial in exactly what you need. Switch on top lets you select from four lighting levels: low, medium, high, bright strobe.

The streamlined design sets the beam at an efficient illumination angle. Ratcheting swivel head aims light where you need it, an indispensable feature for useful headlights.

The elastic headband is easily removable.

You only need to press smoothly the switch button - thus you can change the lighting function whenever you want.

While being not regulated, the maximal runtime is about 150 hours (on low setting) - this little headlamp is a good alternative to Petzl entry level ones.

It weighs 84 grams (about 3 oz.) with batteries.
Recommended price around 30 euros.

LRI, an innovative flashlight manufacturer, already responsible for excellent EDC flashlights like the Photon or the Proton, is releasing a very clever upgrade of its keychain minimalists lights : the ReX.

A little wider than the classic Photon light, the ReX got four Nichia 5mm LEDs embeded in the polycarbonate body - that means that it’s probably as powerful (or maybe more) than first generation cluster-LEDs flashlights - which were running on costly CR 123 lithium batteries and were at least five times bigger.

The main innovation is that ReX get rid of primary CR2032/CR2016 batteries (beside their impact on the environnment, they were not the perfect energy source for LEDs) and is running on a Li-Ion rechargeable battery which can be charged from classical batteries.

From LRI’s documentation, it seems that an AA battery can provide two charges, while an AA-like NiMH battery provides three, and a D alkaline battery about twenty. It takes about two hours to fully charging the ReX and its runtime is from two hours to two days (on the lowest setting).

The Photon Rex retains one of the best feature of the Photon Freedom, its very intuitive and practical user interface, with multiple bright levels, strobes and signals) with a cool phosphorescent button (like the X-Light). For the moment, it comes only in white LEDs/black body, but there is so much variations in the Photon line that we can hope special series to appear quickly.

Rugged, compact, powerful enough for most trivial tasks, ecological, well-priced, for me it’s one the better choice for minimalist hickers. And for casual EDC, it’s a serious contender for every flashlight not equiped with Cree or Rebel emitters. Futhermore, it comes with the extraordinary LRI service and lifetime warranty.
